Toshiba has been long known as a good manufacturer of reliable laptops and it is surely not stopping. To date, Toshiba has released new Satellite and Satellite Pro laptops whose specs have yet to be revealed.

The only thing that can be said right now is the glossy black finish which combines stylish slim-line chassis design with desirable features.

The range offers a textured palm rest, touchpad with metallic mouse buttons and a quick launch multimedia bar, with touch-sensitive buttons and LED lighting.

Additionally, it will have the usual Intel and AMD chips along with some graphic card visualization to adhere towards the demands of most techy freaks today.

How Apple’s iPhone Will Change the Laptop Industry

I wrote in an earlier piece that Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone is most likely to be positioned against laptops as a convergence device that eliminates the need to have to carry around multiple devices. Frank Levinson had talked about the iPhone as a convergence device as well, a few months back.
Let�s take a look at the laptop market. HP (HPQ) is No. 1 with 20% market share, Dell (DELL) is No. 2 with 15%. At No. 3, breathing down Dell�s neck, is an unexpected Taiwanese company: Acer. They�re followed by Toshiba (TOSBF.PK), Lenovo (LNVGY.PK), Fujitsu-Siemens (FJTSY.PK), SONY (SNE), Asus, and at an unglorious No. 9, Apple.

So far, Apple�s strategy has been to sell really expensive notebooks. But with the entry of the iPhone, this could change dramatically! We get all the Apple magic, for a low price-point for laptops, although a very high price-point for a phone.

The branding of this Laptop replacement as a Phone is a clever marketing move. �Here, look, we have a phone that can replace your laptop �� Never mind that it is a very expensive phone.

I wonder how these rankings would look in 2010, if the iPhone was counted under laptops, instead of under Phones? Who could come up with a full scale Windows based covergence device? Is it even possible, given how heavy an OS Vista is? What would happen to Palm (PALM) and Research in Motion (RIMM)? Neither is a full-scale OS. Nor is Symbian. Nor, for that matter, is Windows Mobile, although it has the advantage of being integrated well into the rest of the enterprise eco-system.

Only Linux can meaningfully compete in the OS arena. Who is building the Linux-based covergence device?

Remember, the key decision that Apple has made, is to put the Mac OS on the iPhone, opening up a vast range of possibilities. The competition also needs to think OS!

Save as WWF and Save a Tree::

WWF is just like PDF except you can’t print. That way you can’t use paper. thereby decreasing the need of cutting of trees

It’s an interesting idea to reduce the waste of over printing.

I wonder if the implementation will turn out well.

The economist in me is asking whether saving paper to prevent cutting of trees is better than than saving electricity. Reading a document from your computer or portable hand held is most likely powered by power plants that contribute to CO2 emissions. This also doesn’t include the batteries used in those portable handles because they aren’t biodegradable.

What are your thoughts?

For those 500 million smartphone users worldwide, the concept of what one can do from a phone has far evolved. Nokia - the giant that put a mobile phone in the hands of the masses gave us the Nokia Communicator. A phone which felt like a mini-computer. Then Blackberry with it’s Messenger and Push E-mail created an enterprise ecosystem which altered the divide between personal and professional. Not getting an instant response to an email or a message became something to be frowned upon. Then out of the blue came a system which brought together touch technology with an operating system that created a perfect marriage between technology and simplicity - the iPhone was born. What’s more is that it has continued to build on this powerful framework combining previous innovations with newer concepts. It was this holistic thinking that created the iPod phenomena. An mp3 player was nothing new, but combining it with iTunes was what changed the entire music industry. Similarly the birth of the App Store enabled continuous innovation in the use and experience of iOS devices - iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad and so on. The question is what’s next?

It is very human to take what we have in the present for granted. Quite frankly a lot of what we can do today was the stuff of science fiction not so long ago. The Trekkies from the USS Enterprise gave us a vision of future communications and one such vision has become a reality today in the form of “FaceTime”. Similarly we can all feel like a cyborg from Terminator with an augmented vision of reality using our smart phones with an app like Layar, for example. Such technology is fast becoming commonplace by the day. Feeling quite comfortable and pleased knowing that I live in an era where technology has profoundly empowered individuals to do so much more than could have been imagined I got jolted out of my comfort zone when I came across another vision of the future. But unlike previous eras however I see such a future becoming a reality pretty soon. Perhaps by the time we get the iPhone 5!
